One such incident occurred in Ahmedabad, where a Delhi-bound Dreamliner was forced to turn back shortly after take-off due to a technical snag.

Air India, one of the early adopters of the Boeing 787-8, has had multiple incidents involving this aircraft.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was developed to bring in a new era of fuel efficiency and long-haul comfort.
However, over the years, this aircraft has faced several technical issues that have raised concerns among airlines, regulators, and passengers alike.
This article traces the technical history of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, referencing reports from The Economic Times.
Boeing introduced the 787-8 Dreamliner as a part of its next-generation aircraft series. It promised better fuel savings and was built using lightweight composite materials. The aircraft entered commercial service in 2011 and quickly became popular with global airlines.
Despite its modern features, technical problems began surfacing soon after its entry into service
These include:
- Electrical system failures
- Battery overheating incidents
- Cabin pressure warnings
- Hydraulic leaks
- Software faults
Many of these problems led to emergency landings, flight diversions, or extended maintenance checks.
The N819AN Mystery Jet
One of the most talked-about Dreamliners is the Boeing 787-8 with the registration number N819AN, operated by American Airlines. In just 25 days, this single aircraft was diverted four times due to different technical problems.
- On 9 December 2023, it had cabin pressure issues.
- On 14 December, a heat management problem triggered warnings.
- On 21 December, low oil pressure in the engine led to another diversion.
- And again on 3 January 2024, it faced a similar oil pressure problem.
This raised serious concerns among aviation experts, even though Boeing and the airline claimed the issues were unrelated.
Incidents Involving Air India’s Dreamliners
More recently, an Air India Dreamliner (VT-ANM) was involved in an incident in Ahmedabad. The aircraft, which was flying in from London, veered off the taxiway while landing. Although all passengers and crew were safe, it once again brought the spotlight back to the 787’s reliability record.
The same aircraft has a long history of technical issues dating back to 2014, including faults in brakes, doors, and fuel systems, as reported in official records.
What Boeing Says
Boeing maintains that the Dreamliner is one of the most advanced and safe aircraft in the skies today. They insist that many of the reported issues are routine and manageable, and not unusual for a high-tech aircraft operating regularly across long distances.
Still, airlines and aviation bodies continue to monitor the Dreamliner’s performance closely, especially older models like the 787-8.
