IIT Delhi launches a brand new PG programme in Humanities: Check eligibility, important dates and other details

The Indian Institute of Technology has introduced a new postgraduate-level programme in its curriculum- Master of Arts in Culture, Society, Thought. The two-year full time programme being offered by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is set to begin its classes from July 2024. Application window will open on the IIT Delhi official website from March 20, 2024.Last date to apply is April 4.
Eligible candidates who wish to pursue the MA course will be able to register themselves on the official portal at hss.iitd.ac.in when the application process begins. The IIT Delhi in this regard will also be holding an open-house to inform more about the newly introduced programme and address any queries.

What the newly introduced programme teaches
According to the website, students enrolled in this interdisciplinary programme will gain an understanding of contemporary issues by studying Sociology, Literature, and Philosophy. These core disciplines will provide a lens through which students can investigate topics such as culture, society, and thought.
Additionally, the programme programme is aimed at exposing students to a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches, allowing them to critically analyse and reflect on the complexities of today’s world.
Upon completion of the program, graduates will have the opportunity to pursue further academic research through doctoral programs. Eligibility criteria include maintaining a minimum CGPA, currently set at 8.0, as recommended by the institute. This enables graduates to apply directly to doctoral programs at the IIT Delhi.
Graduates can also seek employment in government and non-governmental organisations, research institutes, and think tanks. Graduates can also pursue careers in media, publishing, journalism, advocacy, social entrepreneurship, and development consulting firms, using their interdisciplinary training to effectively address contemporary societal issues.
Who is eligible to apply
To qualify for admission, candidates must meet specific academic requirements:

  • Graduates with a BA degree need to have achieved at least 55% marks or an equivalent CGPA. Similarly, graduates from other streams such as B.Tech., B.Sc., B.Com., B.Des., B.Ed. are required to have obtained a first division in their respective graduation programs. For candidates belonging to the SC/ST/PwD category, there’s a 5% relaxation in the minimum performance required for the qualifying degree.
  • Both 3-year and 4-year undergraduate program graduates are eligible for admission. However, graduates of 4-year undergraduate programs are not eligible for any credit waivers.
  • B.Tech. Advanced Standing students from IIT Delhi can apply. The performance evaluation for the qualifying degree takes into account all semesters/years, including all subjects, languages, and subsidiary programmes.

IIT Delhi has also clarified that the mentioned criteria are the minimum eligibility requirements. Shortlisting criteria might be raised later on.
Admission process
Admission consists of a written test and an interview. Candidates must perform well on the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences’ written exam or obtain a competitive GATE score in any XH subject in order to be shortlisted.
Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed to assess their analytical, reasoning, and comprehension skills. Final-year candidates are granted provisional admission while their exam results are pending.
